Time to take a look back at previous Bloodstock festivals over the last 17 years and at some point ahead to what this years has to offer.
Twelve months ago I think I got as far the 2005 outdoor event, so now it’s on to the penultimate indoor event held at the Assembly Rooms on September the 2nd and 3rd 2005. Another so so line up for me, a bit too much power metal for my liking.
There we quite a few firsts added to my ever growing list. It was the first time I’d seen HammerFall, and the first time they’d been in the UK for a number of years. I think it was the second time I crossed paths with Amon Amarth. They had been well down on a bill in Bradford a year or so earlier and I think we were there in time to see them, but my memory is fading now.
It was also the first time that I got to experience Within Temptation in what I believe was only their second British show. After a binge listen to mainly Mother Earth and Enter by the Dutch symphonic metal band prior to the festival I was hooked. I’m not sure why The Silent Force wasn’t listened to at the time, maybe I couldn’t buy it in time before their appearance especially as the tour was in support of that album? Oh how difficult it was in the days before Spotify and the like. Back then I had a soft spot for quite a few of the female fronted symphonic outfits.
On the intervening years though I’m disappointed to say though that I’ve only seen the band a handful of times since and they’ve all been at outdoor events, either festivals or the only non festival appearance was their support slot to Iron Maiden at Twickenham, which we just made after searching for merchandise outside.
Thankfully I’ll rectify that as I have a ticket to see them in Manchester in November. That’s going to be a busy weekend with Slayer the evening before (I’m so glad I don’t have to work on Saturdays anymore). I wouldn’t be surprised if the band are due to be playing a field in Derbyshire this time next year too. The festival organisers seem to like to announce bands that have played UK tours in the twelve months beforehand (that’s a rant for another day) and there are still the links between them and the Wacken festival. Within Temptation were included in the first wave of German announcements and they have the aforementioned tour on November. Nailed on for next summer then!
I’m quite surprised it’s taken this long to feature the band in this blog, but it has been three years since I last saw them and most posts here seem to revolve around a live performance of some description and I stared doing this in the year after in 2016. I like cover versions so have a blast of this astounding version of one of Kate Bush’s biggest chart hits originally released in 1985.
