Sticks And Stones

Headlining the third stage on Saturday evening is relatively young Irish thrashers Animator. It’s a shame they overlap with Evile on the main stage, but I’ll grab a good 40 minutes of their scheduled hour long set.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see the band three times in the last four years. Twice in their native Ireland when the supported Xentrix in 2013 and two years later when the opened for Nuclear Assault on their farewell tour, both times in the Voodoo Lounge in Dublin. The third time was on the New Blood stage at Bloodstock 2015.

They formed under the name Heresy back in 2005 in Waterford in the South Eastern part of Eire. They changed name to Animator in 2011 and the Open Your Eyes EP followed a year later. A year further on their debut ten track album Blacklisted surfaced. For whatever reason nothing new was released until a few weeks ago in the form of a four track EP entitled The Venom Within. I’ve not heard it all yet as I was hoping it’d be a physical release, but so far it’s only digital on Bandcamp  – so send €4 their way and indulge yourself, I will be when I get around to firing up the PC – then probably find it on CD on Saturday.

And while you are there “name your price” and grab the full length album at the same time. It’s rather annoying though with Bandcamp that you can’t appear to download direct to an iPhone.

If you’re at the Birmingham shindig on Saturday and some early Metallica and Testament influenced thrash is your thing then pop along to the third stage at 10pm. You won’t be disappointed.
