Live Arena 2016.18

Could I be clocking up the miles next week?

Dear diary…

Monday – Manchester, Sound Control

On what is slated to be a hot day in the UK I’ll be spending five hours or so inside the sweltering Sound Control for an evening of black metal, death metal and thrash.

Tuesday – London, Underworld

I so want to be here on Tuesday night, not necessarily for headliners Metal Church who I get to see in July anyway, but for opening bands Distilator from Holland and Belgians Bliksem who I only caught a few minutes of when they supported Flotsam & Jetsam last year.

Friday – Sheffield, Corporation

Friday sees my first show in Sheffield since I saw Anthrax in the same venue back in 2006. The city is only 50 miles or so away, but it’s all twisting and turning roads over the Pennines. Headlining tonight are reactivated Yorkshire thrashers Amnesia who I never saw first time around. Time to dig out their sole album Unknown Identity from 1991.

Saturday – Hull, O’Reilys

For £6 I couldn’t not buy a ticket to see Re-Animator in a home town show. The band are headlining Hail The Riff all dayer with bands from a more doom and sludge background. Possibly my first gig in Hull too.

Sunday – Northampton, Roadmenders

A bit undecided on day two of this weekend festival. The last three bands on the second stage are Freebase, Warwound and Knuckledust – all bands I consider to be friends, so it’ll be good catching up with some familiar faces. A near two hour drive home though not so welcoming.

Guerrilla Insurgency

Another weekend another trip to London! I’ve been to more gigs in London than I have in Stoke this year, mainly because hardly anyone has visited the area that has interested me. After Sunday’s show I still have one more in London to round out the year.

Sunday’s show see’s a thrash triple bill finishing off their European tour. The task of opening the shows on the First Contact Tour goes to Dutch thrashers Distillator.

I’m pretty certain this is their first trip to the UK, I could be wrong so apologies if I am. Being blunt the Enschede trio are nothing original with their crunching Destruction inspired thrash metal, but what they do they do extremely well.

For a band who will only reach their third anniversary in January 2016 they appear to be as highly polished as their numerous bullet belts. A debut album in the bag, two European tours done and support slots with heavy weights such as Anthrax, W.A.S.P., Suicidal Tendencies and Gojira. This is one band I’m really looking forward to seeing.

The Live Arena 7

When the concerts are getting sparse it’s either the height of the festival season and every band seems to be playing in a field of mud somewhere within Europe or winter is drawing in and Christmas is fast approaching. In the forthcoming seven days I only have one guaranteed show, but I have a dilemma for mid week.

Sunday – Camden Underworld.

Confirmed.  This is the only guaranteed gig for the week and involves yet another trip to the nation’s capital.  This marks the first visit to these shores by American technical thrashers Vektor.  Support is of an international ilk from Spain’s Angelus Apatrida and Dutch thrashers Distillator.

Wednesday – The dilemma!

I have the choice of four shows all on the same night.

  1. Turnstile supporting The Story So Far in Manchester.  I missed Turnstile at Ghostfest, so I’d really like to catch them here, but this show looks like it’s sold out.
  2. Grave and Malevolent Creation in London.  I only really want to see Grave on this co-headlining jaunt as I’ve yet to see them live, but the running order isn’t announced yet and I’d miss most of Grave to get the last train home if they headlined.
  3. Hobb’s Angel of Death play a Northern show in Liverpool. One of Australia’s earliest thrash bands makes an extremely rare (if not debut) set of shows in the UK.
  4. Belphegor and Vital Remains in Wolverhampton.  Definitely the fourth choice gig of the lot as I’m not a massive fan of the Austrian and American black metal  and death metal offerings, but if I do end up here it’ll be due to me being the designated driver.

So lets wait and see what happens.
